Introduction

DZONG SA is a high-end hospitality destination in Ghami, Upper Mustang, Nepal, set within a 17th-century winter palace of the King of Mustang. Envisioned as a refined retreat featuring suites and guestrooms, a restaurant and bar, spa and yoga experiences, and an art gallery, the project is deeply rooted in local culture, heritage, and community. The brand needed to position DZONG SA as a distinctive luxury destination for both the Nepal and international hotel market, while reflecting its strong sense of place, cultural authenticity, and timeless sophistication. 

Challenge

The main challenge was to create a brand identity that balanced high-end positioning with deep local relevance. DZONG SA needed to feel premium and internationally appealing, while still remaining true to the story of Ghami, the heritage of Mustang, and the character of the historic palace itself. The brand also needed to communicate multiple facets of the experience — hospitality, wellness, food, art, and community — under one cohesive identity. At the same time, the visual and verbal language had to avoid generic luxury tropes and instead express a more meaningful sense of refinement shaped by local culture, architecture, materials, and landscape.

Solution

Kazi Studios created a branding system for DZONG SA that preserves the soul of an ancient palace and translates it into a refined hospitality experience rooted in awe, serenity, and a deep sense of place. The identity was inspired by the landscape, architecture, and cultural heritage of Upper Mustang, balancing international luxury with local authenticity.

The logo was conceptualized from Horig (Hor-yig), an ornamental Tibetan calligraphic style based on the vertical Phags-pa script, historically used for seals, titles, and architectural inscriptions. By drawing from this ceremonial visual language, the identity gained a sense of heritage, prestige, and timelessness that reflects the story of the palace and the uniqueness of the destination.
